COLOSSIANS 3:22-25
As believer
in Christ, God is interested in every aspect of your life, even to the minutest
detail. Your work life is equally important to him; hence he gave guidelines
regarding how you should do your secular tasks. Some Christians wrongly believe
that they should only behave well and keep to biblical injunctions when dealing
with fellow believers as bosses in their offices. In fact, more is expected
from you towards your unbelieving bosses.
Our reading instructs Christians to be obedient to their bosses in their workplaces. It is immaterial whether their superiors are believers or not. Also they are enjoined to shun lip service and strive to please Christ in all they do.
Today in many establishments, Christians handle their work with levity. They take things for granted. You want to be promoted as and when due. But do you put in your heartfelt contribution for the benefit of that establishment? I expect those who either go late to work or leave regularly before the agreed closing time, to be ashamed of being paid for what they do not deserve.
A Christian in his workplace is a light. Matthew 5:14 says: “You are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hidden.” Your life should be an example to your colleagues and bosses in your office. People should be able to testify to the witness they find in you. They may hate but they should be able to say, 'That man will never receive a bride. When he comes late to work, he will sign the exact he arrived.'
Your boss should know you to the extent of trusting you with company finances and goods. He should be able to say that you are different from others. If this is not so, go to God to change your attitude. After all, someday, you will stand to account before God concerning the deeds done while on earth. This includes your business or official assignment. One day, Jesus will reward you, so look beyond your boss.
