SPIRITUAL SLUMBER

READ: PSALM 132:1-7
Our text today opens up before us a new wellspring of truth. The subject of spiritual alertness is very crucial in these end times. Spiritual slumber is dangerous. David, a man after God’s heart, made up his mind not to go into spiritual slumber. Specifically, David was saying he would not sleep until he had built the house of God. We all know that you cannot singularly build a house in a day. The building of the temple of God is likely to take several weeks. What David was saying was that he would not rest until he had achieved his goal. In Songs of Solomon 5:2, the Bible says: “I sleep, but my heart is awake; it is the voice of my beloved! He knocks, saying, Open for me, my sister, my love, my dove, my perfect one; for my head is covered with dew, my locks with the drops of the night.” This tells us that you can be physically asleep while your soul is awake. David was saying in Psalm 132 that his soul and spirit would remain awake until the house of God was built. The Bible also tells us that some people “sleep the sleep of the soul”. Soul relates to our ability to understand. Romans 11:8 says (Just as it is written “God has given them a spirit of stupor, eyes that they should not see and ears that they should not hear, to this very day.”). When you preach the gospel to some people, because they have fallen asleep in the soul, they would not understand, no matter how hard you try. It takes the Almighty God to open the eyes of our soul to begin to understand. That is why Paul the Apostle prayed. Ephesians 1:17-19 says: “That the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give you the spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of Him, the eyes of y-our understanding being enlightened; that you may know what is the hope of His calling, what are the riches of the glory of His inheritance in the saints, and what is the exceeding greatness of His power toward us who believe, according to the working of His mighty power.” You must devote ample time to praying on spiritual enlightenment. A moment’s spiritual slumber can be catastrophic. Ask God to constantly give you the eyes of an eagle.
MEMORIZE: PROVERBS 6:4 –Give no sleep to your eyes, nor slumber to your eyelids.
