WRONG USE OF TONGUE

READ: JAMES 3:1-10
God is interested in how you use your tongue. No matter how spiritual you may be, if you cannot bridle your tongue, you may split hell wide open (James 1:26). Talkativeness is sin. Proverbs 10:19 says you are most likely to sin if you talk too much. Besides, after spending quality time in God’s presence and feeling the anointing upon you, if you talk excessively, before you realise it, all the anointing will have dissipated, and you will find yourself empty.
A talkative person will most likely engage in jesting and idle talk, which the Scriptures say are not appropriate. He will be carried by his words and reveal valuable secrets to those who should not hear them. This is why some people keep asking God to reveal his secrets to them. They fast for days and weeks but God does not grant their requests because he cannot entrust his secrets to those who would publicise them.
Backbiting is speaking evil of someone. The Bible in 1 Peter 4:15 groups backbiters with murderers, thieves and evildoers who are all heading for hell. Liars are not left out. Some give lies certain shades of colour. They say white lies are harmless, therefore they are all right. An example of this is when you attribute your lateness at work to a traffic jam, instead of admitting to the fact that you woke up late.
“But the cowardly, unbelieving, abominable, murderers, sexually immoral, sorcerers, idolaters, and all liars burns with fire and brimstone, which is the second death.” (Revelation 21:8)
Man’s rational explanations of sin do not change God’s standards concerning them. Flattering people and calling them what they are not, amounts to vanity and sin before God. Psalm 12:1-3 says God will cut off flattering lips and the tongues that speak proudly. A child of God should let his ‘Yes’ be ‘Yes’ and his ‘No’ be ‘No’. He should not exaggerate, as this will attract God’s judgement. Are you still misusing your tongue? Repent today.
MEMORIZE: PROVERB 10-19: -In the multitude of words sin is not lacking, but he who restrains his lips is wise.
