UNCOMMONNESS OF UNDERSTANDING

READ: JOB 17:1-5
“Then opened He their understanding, that they might understand the scriptures” (Luke 24:25). A word that is so commonly used but whose meaning is better imagined than experienced by its users is understanding: To understand suggests knowing the meaning or language of what someone is speaking to you; making sense out of certain words or phrases. It could also mean to know or realize how a fact, process or sitiuation works especially through learning or experience.
Understanding is great and priceless virtue everyone who must succeed in life and ministry should have. Unfortunately, it is a very rare quality. Wisdom and understanding are twin sisters (Proverbs 4:5), but unlike its twin, not many people truly see their need for understanding. In fact, because it has been relegated to the archives, understanding decided to make itself scarce except to those who know and appreciate its value. If the Word of God is not understood, it will be sidelined or abused. Without understanding, readers and hearers of God’s Word cannot make much sense or meaning from the content. Content (knowledge) of God’s Word without understanding is worse than ignorance. That is why Proverbs 4:7 says whatever you acquire on earth, ensure understanding is on the priority list.
Why is lack of understanding so rife even in the Church today? When you offend God and refuse to have a permanent turn-around, He can puncture your container of understanding and drain it (Job 12:20). Also, someone who is walking in pride and refuse to submit himself to God, can have his or her heart shielded from understanding (Job 17:4). This may prevent the fellow from receiving a particular promotion God had planned for him or her. You will not be denied your promotion in Jesus name. refusal to study God’s Word daily robs believers of understanding (Psalm 119:104). Anger is a major drainer of understanding (Proverbs 14:29). If you are wordly-wise and want to use your understanding against God and His kingdom, you could lose it (Proverbs 21:30; Isaiah 29:14). Refusal to find time to meditate on God’s Word is another robber of understanding. Many believers lack understanding. Do you understand the scriptures you read, the visions you see and dreams you receive? Ask the Lord for this virtue. If you are a sinner, repent or else you cannot access divine understanding.
MEMORIZE: ISAIAH 29:14 –Therefore, behold, I will proceed to do a marvellous work among this people, even a marvellous work and a wonder; for the wisdom of their wise men shall perish, and the undersatnding of their prudent men shall be hidden.
