THE IRREVOCABLE BLESSING

READ: GENESIS 27:26-40
Just as most blessings are conditional and cannot be released until the conditions are met, certain blessings are unconditional. When a father decides to bless his son, he may hardly tie such a blessing to conditions. It is the duty of the father to bless his children as long as he is happy with them. And when he blesses them, nothing can change it because it is an unconditional blessing. In today’s reading, through crooked means Jacob made his father bless him. When his elder brother Esau returned, he met his father, and wept yet the blessing on Jacob could not be reversed. The Lord will give an irrevocable blessing today.
“Reuben, you are my firstborn, my might, and the beginning of my strength, the excellency of dignity, and the excellency of power: Unstable as water, you shall not excel; because you went up to your father’s bed; then defiled you it; he went up to my couch” (Genesis 49:3-4). When a father or mother blesses, it can be a tremendous experience. Equally, when a father or mother curses their children, it will take only Jesus Christ to reverse it. This is one reason children must learn to take proper care of their parents. Are you neglecting your parents?
Children must be careful not to offend their parents except when they ask to sin against God. In Ephesians 6:1-3, children are commanded to obey and honour their parents so as to receive the blessings of a better and long life. A generation that refuses to obey and honour parents is a wasted generation. They will die during their prime. No matter how tall, fat, huge, wise, rich or influential a child becomes, he cannot exchange roles with his parents: he still remains their child. A child who cannot care, and adequately cater for his aging parents is a disgrace to the body of Christ. If you live in affluence but neglect your duties to your parents, it shows the unbelievers are even better than you. If such neglected parents should curse children, it will stick. Claim all the Bible passages and promises, if you dishonor your parents and they curse you, it will surely affect you because you have already broken the hedge for the serpent to come in. But you can take care of your parents to the point that they will pronounce an irrevocable blessing on you. That blessing may not be automatic: you may have to earn it.
MEMORIZE: EPHESIANS 6:2 –Honour your father and mother; which is the first commandment with promise.
