READ: MATTHEW 14:3-11
“Behold everyone that use proverbs shall use
this proverb against you, saying, As is the mother, so is her daughter” (Ezekiel 16:44).
In Genesis 19:16-26, when God wanted to rescue Lot and his family from His fiery judgement on Sodom and Gomorrah, his wife looked back and became the first fruit of pillars of salt for those who backslide from the faith of Christ. After that rescue, Lot and his two daughters lived on a mountain in Zoar. The daughters connived to make their father drunk and went into an incestuous intercourse with him. Although they were out of Sodom, the spirit of Sodom which operated in their mother was still operating in them. Like mother like daughters!
In a big party Herod organized, his daughter danced so much that she not only won the standing ovation of the lords and rulers present, but she also got an offer to ask for anything from her father (Matthew 14:3-11). She went to consult with her mother and on her return asked for the head of the nation’s prophet on a golden platter. She never even queried her mother’s request. Like mother like daughter! Sometime ago, when we confronted the daughter of a pastor who was involved in fornication, she laughed and asked what was wrong with a pastor’s daughter fornicating. She said she learnt it from her mother. Are you a mother? What are you teaching your daughters? Are you a father? What are you teaching your sons?
Many parents have misled their children. They are the cause of their children’s woes. A very beautiful, wealthy and influential woman could not stay with one husband. She ended up having children for three different men across the geographical divide. Years later, some of her children together with powerful demons lured her to sell eleven houses for peanuts. And they spent the money frivolously. These children abandoned her and would fight and beat her from time to time especially when they reflect on her impact on them. Eventually, she gave her life to Christ yet they refused to care for her except one of them. She suffered greatly but with the prayer support of her parish, the Lord intervened. She was bitter but was advised to forgive them. Eventually, she reconciled with them before she passed on to glory. Division and waywardness of her children were what they learnt from their parents. What are you sowing into your children? You may think they do not notice what you are doing: They do and will even do worse. Be very careful.
