AMBITION: WHAT CONFIGURATION?

READ: 2 SAMUEL 15:1-14
Ambition is a strong or overriding desire to achieve something –political power, academic success, wealth or fame. Besides these earthly shades of ambition, you can also have spiritual ambition. Whatever the shade, how you handle ambition and what it is channelled towards are very important. It is alright to desire to become a professor, attain the peak of your professional career, succeed in life, be wealthy or become a president or governor. One crucial question here is: How do you want to achieve that desire? The means to that end is of keen interest to God. If you choose to use evil means to arrive at your destination, it automatically counts God out and puts you in partnership with Satan.
Naturally, one would expect that Absalom, King David’s third son who became the eldest after he murdered Ammon will succeed him. His name meant father of peace. His mother Maccah was a princess of Geshur before being married to King David. Absalom was very handsome and well endowed physically. He was charming, eloquent and charismatic.
He felt he could not wait for the right time to be considered for the throne. He devised a plot to overthrow his father. He conspired with David’s chief adviser Ahitophel and declared himself king after turning the hearts of the Israelites away from his father. David had to go on exile. Not long after, Absalom met his tragic death. His ambition had driven him to an early grave.
How are you working towards realising your ambition today? Are you using blackmail to discredit the person occupying the position you are fighting for? Do you want to end up like Absalom? Are you bowing to Nebuchadnezzar’s image so as to earn his favour? Are you pursuing that goal at the expense of your walk with God? Consider your ways. God expects you to handle your pursuits with the fear of God and within the ambit of His will and plan for your life. Have you bothered to find out if God wants you to do those things you are presently pursuing?
MEMORIZE: PROVERBS 10:9 –He that walks uprightly walks surely; but he that perverts his ways shall be known.
