STRANGE FIRE

READ: LEVITICUS 10:1-11
Aaron and his children had just been consecrated as priests of the Most High God. Some offerings were made and put on the altar. By the time Moses and Aaron were through with what God has instructed them to do, God’s glory appeared and fire came from the Lord and consumed the offering on the altar to signify acceptance. When the people saw this, they shouted and fell on their faces. Whenever you satisfy God’s demands, you will receive His divine approval. Usually this comes with a blessing. Imagine how the congregation felt to have God in their midst. It was an awesome moment for all. But just in the midst of this glorious experience, two of Aaron’s sons who were newly consecrated as priests were so carried away that they got drunk. Without discerning God’s presence and without being instructed to do so, they went to make an offering to God. They did not live to tell the rest of the story.
Nadab and Abihu were roasted by the same fire that came to protect them. Worse still, Aaron and his remaining sons were forbidden by Moses from mourning their dead or else they too would join them in hell. Hebrews 10:31 says, “It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God” because He is a “consuming fire” (Hebrews 12:29). Refusing to honour God before His people attracts judgement.
Today, on several pulpits, ministers play God. They act arrogantly like they are representing themselves. They live in secret sin. In fact some may go from the place of lies, fornication or theft of God’s funds straight to the pulpit. That is strange fire. Some use the pulpit as the place to canvass for political votes or do business. Are you honouring the One who made you a minister by doing so?
As a servant of God you are expected to be clean. The closer you are to God the more dangerous it is for you to sin. A minister who is in sin especially the sin of immorality has no business with God’s altar. Whatever you offer then constitutes strange fire and that fire will begin to destroy you. Moses could not enter the Promised Land because he did not sanctify God before the people. How are you offering strange fire today? Repent and restitute your ways.
MEMORIZE: 1 TIMOTHY 3:2 –A bishop then must be blameless, the husband of one wife, vigilant, sober, of good behavior, given to hospitality, apt to teach.
