READ: HEBREWS 13:1-3
When Abraham saw the
three visitors in Genesis 18, he bowed himself to the ground. This shows that
he was humble even to total strangers. In Genesis 19:1, Lot, his nephew did the
same to strangers. If you are humble, there is nothing you desire that you
cannot have. For Abraham and Lot, humility was part of the home training they
got from their parents. In the name of modernization, some parents do not raise
their children to greet their elders or to humble themselves before them. Children
will call their parents and elders by their first name. A child will tell his
father: Don’t be silly! And to the father nothing is wrong. Let us go back to
the Bible. Any child that lacks home training provides unnecessary negative
exposure to his parents.
Abraham also offered them water to wash their feet. He had a sense of cleanliness. Some people still take their personal hygiene for granted. They cannot brush their teeth especially when they are fasting. Their excuse is that they do not want to swallow water in the process. Psalm 24:3-4 says to stand in God’s presence, you must have clean hands and a pure heart. That means you must be pure within and without. You should have your bath in the morning and in the evening, because you cannot tell when Jesus will pay you a visit. If you have a body odour or you sweat a lot, use deodorant and improve your presentation. Be properly dressed in clean clothes. It will attract those you want to preach to and make them enjoy your company. If people endure rather than enjoy your company, something is not right with your outlook and presentation. Some sisters refuse to wash and set their hair for so long that it begins to stink. Such hair will chase away the sinner you want to preach to. Change!
Abraham was also very hospitable. Hospitality is part of home training lessons parents should give their children. How hospitable are you? When you visit some families they cannot even give you a cup of cold water. Sometime ago I visited a family. I went with a particular gift for them. They welcomed and greeted me. And I greeted them and we kept exchanging greetings. They could not even offer a cup of cold water and I marveled at their stinginess. So I told them bye and left with my gift. If you are stingy, the cup of water you cannot give, can rob you of precious and very costly blessings. Be hospitable. You could entertain angels without knowing.
