UNMASKING THE ‘REJECTS’

READ: 1 SAMUEL 22:1-2
After David escaped from the enemies’ camp, he ran into a cave called Adullam. While he was there, some people including those from his father’s house, the distressed, the discontented and the hopeless came to meet him. They came all the way to meet for protection because they could see he had something to offer. Even today, many people are prepared to risk their lives and go tens, and hundreds and even thousands of miles to someone in a remote place whom they believe can solve their problem. The question is, as a child of God and particularly as a minister, what do you have to offer the needy and dying ones? Can people see the light of Christ in you? How often do they come to you to help solve their problem?
In today’s reading, we see that all the rejects and problem-laden people who came to meet David at the cave were the ones who became David’s mighty men. This simply tells us that David was very good in human resources development and training. After he sought protection from Samuel and it failed, he went to his enemies and realising they were about to pounce on him, he ran to the cave. As this time, David realised he needed a strong army for himself. As he thought of it, these people began to come one by one. But they were not trained soldier; only a bunch of frustrated and hopeless people. David did not complain but saw this as his opportunity to build his army. He invested himself in them and got the army he desired.
Some pastors today keep complaining of below-quality-level of workers they were given to start their parish. As a result of this they blame the stunted growth of the parish on the workers. If you say your workers are not good enough, wait until you see that of other parishes. Such pastors are seeing the wrong side of the coin. David saw his ‘rejects’ as a potential army and so it became. God has given you your ‘rejects’ so that you can impart the good things He has invested in you, into them, so that they can become God’s mighty army. Stop complaining. Those impossible workers and ministers are there to bring out your knowledge about managing human resources. If you do not have that knowledge then buy books on the subject, study and pray and train them into God’s mighty army. If you can do this, then you have succeeded. Your most effective and greatest loyalists may be the ‘rejects’.
MEMORIZE: MATTHEW 5:16 –Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.
