HEBREWS 10:28-31
As free
moral agents, everyone is free to determine what his response to the Holy
Spirit should be. Unknown to many, their destiny and eternal abode will be
determined by their response to the Holy Spirit.
In Acts 5:3, Ananias lied to the Holy Spirit but did not live to tell the rest of the story. Today, many are still lying to the Holy Spirit in various ways. One way is by claiming to have been baptised in the Holy Spirit when you are not. Another is by counterfeiting genuine tongues of the Spirit. A third way is by telling lies to a man of God. Those who lie to the Holy Ghost in any of these ways are courting death and making their beds in Hell.
According to Acts 7:51, you can resist the Holy Spirit. When you refuse to yield to His call or direction, you are resisting him. To resist Him, is to stand up to Him as an equal, rubbing shoulders with Him. By this you are calling His bluff and saying, ‘What can you do if I refuse to listen to you?’ Such people are courting trouble. “And grieve not the Holy Spirit of God, whereby you are sealed to the day of redemption” (Ephesians 4:30).
According to the above passage, you can grieve the Holy Spirit. You can do this by attempting to discourage somebody who is filled with the Spirit. According to Genesis 6:36, you grieve the Spirit when you live a reckless and lawless life after you become born again. Some people have even insulted or blasphemed the Holy Spirit. Through this they permanently shut heaven’s gate against themselves (Hebrews 10:29 and Matthew 12:31). To avoid blaspheming, anytime the Holy Spirit is moving and strange things are happening which you do not understand, just keep your mouth shut.
1 Thessalonians 5:19 says, “Quench not the Spirit”. You quench the fire and light of the Holy Spirit through disobedience and refusal to yield to Him. But today, you can be on fire for the Lord. In whatever negative ways you have responded to the Holy Spirit, repent and turn a new leaf. The more you respond to Him in obedience, the more His power will grow in you. The more also will He keep using you as a vessel unto honour.
