DANGEROUS COMFORT

READ: DEUTERONOMY 8:7-14
Comfort is one thing every human being desires. For the believer, comfort, as good as it is, must be handled with care. It is a major cause of spiritual slumber in Christians. 2 Samuel 11:1-2 signs a discordant note about David, the man after God’s heart. When he was being chased about from one cave to another by king Saul, he did not have time to sleep. When he was leading war against the Philistines, he did not sleep. But after he was made king and had peace, David slept. Comfort kills. Do not pray for the level of comfort you cannot handle. If you know having a Rolls Royce will cause to forget God, then do not pray for it (Proverbs 30:7-9).
In today’s reading, God warns us ahead of His blessing. He says after He has granted you your desires, do not forget Him. After arriving at your promised land, do not diminish in your allegiance, obedience and faith. He is building you up today through difficulties and problems (which are merely spiritual muscle-fixing exercises), into a close walk with Him. He expects that by the time you arrive at your promised land, you will sustain your relationship with Him. Each time your commitment and love to God dwindles as a result of His blessings, His heart bleeds. If your water bed is hindering from praying at night, sleep on the floor a few times a week. Take time to fast. Set aside some moments to separate yourself from your comfort and seek God’s face. You need to do this from time to time, so that your earthly comfort does not rob you of your eternal home.
In addition, old age can cause you to sleep. Joel 2:28 says the elders will dream dreams. The older you get the more spiritually alert you should be. If you are forty and above, you should be more conscious of Heaven because you are getting nearer home than the younger ones. It should also be easier for you to obey God completely.
Lastly, God Himself can cause you to slumber and sleep. This happened when He was to bring Eve out of Adam (Genesis 2:21). Also when He was to give a revelation to Abraham’s future generation (Genesis 15:12-15). At other times, God makes a man sleep when He wants to fight him. Are you still sleeping? Rise up today.
MEMORIZE: JOB 11:17 –And your age shall be clearer than the noonday; you shall shine forth, you shall be as the morning.
