READ: MATTHEW 2:1-8, 16
In1 Samuel 25:4-10, when
David sent his men to Nabal to receive some token of appreciation for security
provided for Nabal’s shepherds and sheep, Nabal replied sarcastically, “Who is
David? And who is the son of Jesse?” Nabal statement was derogatory.
In Matthew 18:10, the Lord warns us never to look down on anyone, not even children. Little as they may be, their angels are in Heaven beholding God’s face. It is wisdom not to despise a little child. You don’t know what the child may be tomorrow. Jesus is the Alpha and Omega (Revelation 1:8). He alone knows what tomorrow has in store for any one.
One person who would take any child for granted is Herod. In our reading when the visiting wise men disclosed their mission, which was to worship a child born king of Jews, Herod was taken aback. Another king? He began to conjure pictures of the child growing up so soon and coming to overthrow him. Herod could not take it. He was troubled and the whole of Jerusalem knew no peace. But one would say; all these trouble for just a baby? He did not rest until he killed all the children in Bethlehem and neighbouring coasts who were two years old and under.
Never despise a child. The child of today is the leader tomorrow. The child of today is the president of tomorrow. The baby of today is the Apostle Paul, Billy Graham and Kenneth E. Hagin of tomorrow. The rich man of today may become very impoverished tomorrow. The poor man of today may become the richest man on earth tomorrow. The messenger of today can become the managing director employing tens of thousands of employees across the continents. 1 Corinthians 1: 28-29 says God can turn those who are regarded as nothing into something. That is your portion. Stop looking down on yourself. The David who was a nobody became one of the greatest kings Israel never produced. You are destined for greatness. Those who are saying ‘Who are you’, before long, they will be bowing down to you. The Lord will lift you up above those who are looking down on you.
