SUBMIT TO PARENTS

READ: GENESIS 22:7-9
In today’s reading, we see something interesting about Abraham and his son, Isaac. Abraham taught Isaac how to submit both to him and to God. One the way to mount Moriah, when Isaac asked his father of the only missing ingredient in their sacrifice, he told him God will provide. Isaac did not ask any other question after this because Abraham had taught him how to submit to God. On reaching the mountain and preparing the altar, Abraham asked Isaac to lie on it, and he obeyed promptly. At this time Isaac was a strong youth while his father was over a hundred years old. If he had wanted to run, his father could not have stopped him. He submitted because he believed God asked his father to use him as the sacrifice and God must be obeyed.
Correct your son, and he shall give you rest; yea, he shall give delight to your soul” (Proverbs 29:17). If you love your child, you will discipline him. If you don’t, he will bring you trouble. God’s purpose for the house of Eli was truncated because he did not discipline his children (1 Samuel 2:27-30). David loved his children but never bothered to discipline them, so he raised a group of horrible children. One of them, Ammon, raped his sister Tamar. Absalom killed Ammon for that crime, overthrew his father and desecrated what his father stood for. David could kill the giant outside but could not kill the giant inside.
Children submit to your parents (Ephesians 6:1-3). There are two kinds of children: those without home training and those who were trained but rejected the training. If you do not want to die young, honour your parents. (Exodus 20:12) Eli’s children died a tragic death on the same day because they refused to hearken to their father (1 Samuel 4:10-11). Absalom was physically endowed. To complement this, God gave him a unique hair. When he rebelled against his father, God turned his hair which was his glory into his doom (2 Samuel 18:9-15). Children who honoured and submitted to their parents always ended up greater than their parents. For instance, while God blessed Abraham, He multiplied Isaac. The same is true of spiritual parents and children. Joshua was Moses’ servant and was totally submissive to him. When Moses died, God promoted him to take over. Joshua accomplished what Moses could not. In spite of his wealth, Elisha submitted totally to Elijah. At the ends he got the double portion of Elijah’s spirit.
MEMORIZE: PROVERBS 29:17 –Correct your son, and he shall give you rest; yea, he shall give delight to your soul.
