READ: JOSHUA
5:13-14
When David
fled from king Saul, he kept running until he got to Adullam. It was there all
kind of individuals with problems came to meet him for protection and succour
and he became their captain. We believers have a Captain. 2 Chronicles 13:12
says God is our Captain. According to our reading, on their way to the Promised
Land, the Israelites arrived at Jericho. And as Joshua surveyed the highly
fortified walls of Jericho, he met a man with his sword drawn. He took him for
an enemy and challenged him. In the process the man said he was the Captain of
the Host of the Lord. This Captain was the Lord Jesus Christ.
Before His incarnation as a man, the Almighty God had to send Him to accomplish certain jobs for him in the Old Testament dispensation (Psalm 107:20). This was one of such manifestations. Hebrews 2:9-10 calls Him the Captain of our salvation. Thank God we have someone greater than David as captain.
The captain of any team has certain duties and responsibilities. He leads the team. In Psalm 23:1, David was saying since he made the Lord his captain, lack ceased. The secret of David’s success as captain over men, was that he first made Jesus his captain. Today as a leader, if you can follow the leadership of Christ, you will be sure to lead your people aright. The degree of your success as a captain over men and congregations is dependent on the extent to which you submit under the captainship of Jesus Christ.
A captain also keeps the company of his team. He fellowships regularly with them and gets to know them in depth in the process. To this end, Jesus promises not to leave or forsake us (Hebrews 13:5). Do you spend time with those you lead? How much do you know about what your spouse is going through in the office? Apart from these, a captain advises his people. He does not use force on them, but gently advises them on what to do. Those under you will easily respond to your advice than to command. Care is needed in handling them or else they will not yield to your leadership. Make Jesus your Captain today.
