HEBREWS 11:4-5
If there is
one argument that has pervaded the thoughts of Christians, it is the issue of
holy living in this present world. Some have argued saying, how can a fish in a
river avoid drinking water from that river? By this, they conclude it is
impossible to live above sin. The Scriptures, however, tell us that through
faith, many lived righteous lives which were acceptable to God. One such
character is Abel.
“By faith Abel offered to God a more excellent sacrifice than Cain, through which he obtained witness that he was righteous, God testifying of his gifts; and through it he being dead still speaks.” Hebrews 11:4.
Abel satisfied God’s requirements and was declared righteous. The moment you meet God’s requirements for salvation, you will be born again and be declared righteous. That is the beginning. From that moment, God expects obedience and holy living from you everyday.
From today’s reading, we are told also of Enoch. He lived such a holy life that God translated him from earth to heaven without him tasting death. An outstanding attribute of his righteousness was that he excelled in pleasing God. The ability to please God amounts to righteousness. How do you please God today?
Abraham believed in God contrary to his physical senses and limitations. And God recorded it for him as an act of righteousness. Abel, Enoch and Abraham all displayed different shades of virtues which were recorded as righteousness through faith. You too can live righteously. You can offer a better sacrifice. You can excel in pleasing God. You can so believe in God that it would be recorded as an act of righteousness. Take a cue from these characters and begin to live righteously.
