READ: LUKE 19:1-9
Human beings vary from
one person to another. Generally, elites are plagued with sickness peculiar to
their class. The kind of problems or ailments that are hardly found among the
poor are prevalent among the important people. The deaths of several rich
people have been attributed to sickness not common with poor people such as
hypertension, insomnia, diabetes, cancer, high cholesterol levels, heart attack,
radiculopathy, etc.
In my village, hypertension is not common. The villagers do not worry about anything. They eat farm fresh foods. When you hear them singing and dancing in the evening, you would think they are billionaires. In my village, most people there do not know anything about cholesterol. Those days, while still a child, we could not afford to eat meat during Christmas or Easter. Eggs were beyond reach. When a doctor tells you he can control, but cannot cure a particular sickness, you should be sure he is referring to ailments commons to the rich. In my foreign travels and ministrations, during programmes attended by V.I.P’s, I have discovered that rich people have peculiar problems common to Naaman’s (2 Kings 5:11-14).
In today’s reading, Zacchaeus had a peculiar problem. Although he recorded great achievements in life, he knew he took crooked paths to arrive where he was. He trampled on people’s rights, cheated others and used his position to oppress some. Now he wanted to see Jesus so that he could have peace of mind which those material things could not offer him. Zacchaeus was afraid that someday the proverbial nemesis would catch up with him, so he completely surrendered to Jesus and restituted his ways. Have you, in the quest of power, position, money and fame, committed violence against God and your fellow man? Has peace eluded you? Receive Jesus today and restitute your ways and you will have peace.
