THE MOUNTAIN WITHIN

READ: 2 KINGS 1:9-10
Elijah met the servant king Ahaziah sent to enquire of Baalzebub – the god of Ekron – if he would recover or not. Elijah sent him back to tell the king that he would surely die. After describing the prophet, the king knew it was Elijah and immediately sent an army of fifty soldiers and their captain to arrest him. When they got there, he was on top of a hill. There are a few lessons to learn from this story. Elijah was a mountain man. Although God is everywhere, does it appear His presence is better felt on a mountain top. Several supernatural events took place on mountain tops. Moses received God’s law for Israel on mount Sinai. That was where he had access to the secret ways of the Lord.
It was on mount Moriah God asked Abaraham to sacrifice his most important asset – Isaac. And when he passed the test, God provided the sacrificial ram and swore to multiply his seed (Genesis 22:1-19). David was a mountain man. During his days as a young shepherd boy and later while he fled from king Saul, he visited mountains. In his Psalms, he wrote about some of his mountain top experiences. Such trips to mountains helped to dismiss all the distractions and side attractions of the valley and make him focus on the Creator (Psalm 121:1-2).
In His days on earth, Jesus Christ visited mountains. He often withdrew to mountains to pray and fellowship with the Father. That was His ideal spot for vigils. In Mark 9:1-10, Jesus was momentarily transfigured into His glorified state on the top of a very high mountain. In Acts 1:7-12, He ascended into Heaven from mount Oliveth. Why was the mountain so significant? According to Isaiah 8:18, there was once a time God lived on mount Zion. Today He dwells in our hearts. You do not need to climb to the highest mountain before you can meet God. If you are born again, the mountain is now in your heart. God expects you to meet Him on top of the mountain within your heart. In John 4:20-24, Jesus made it clear that God wants you to worship Him from your spirit man and based on the truth of His word. If these expectations are met, anything is possible to you on the mountain top within your heart. How frequently do you visit your internal mountain?
MEMORIZE: JOHN 4:24 –God is a Spirit; and they that worship Him must worship Him in spirit and in truth.
