WHAT’S IN A BIRTHRIGHT?

READ: GENESIS 27:26-29
In Genesis 25:29-31, Esau returned from the field in hunger. Having lost control of his body to his stomach, he traded his birthright for a plate of pottage. Some believers see nothing wrong with that decision because have not given a thought about what the birthright entailed. Unlike the limited opportunities of the ordinary first born, the birthright of men in direct lineage of Christ had the following components: Double portion of what other children are entitled to: he becomes the ruling head of the whole tribe, the father’s blessing, becomes the spiritual leader and priest of the family or tribe, and receives choice portions of all family lands.
Other benefits inherent in the birthright are: fruitfulness of offsprings, personal blessings, a great name, material prosperity, spiritual blessing of Abraham, power over enemies, leadership of nations, father of many nations and kings, ‘father’ of the Messiah, have Jehovah as God, be a blessing to the nations, eternal inheritance, partaking in the Abrahamic covenant, eternal natural seed and curse on enemies, etc. can you imagine losing all these priceless benefits to a plate of pottage? What a loss!
“For you know how that afterward, when he would have inherited the blessing, he was rejected; for he found no place of repentance, though he sought it carefully with tears” (Hebrews 12:17). At the time Esau traded his birthright for a plate of food, he did not even consider it at all. What was important to him then was having a filled stomach, satisfying the yearnings of the flesh. But later, when it was time for the blessings to be released, his eyes opened to all that were contained in the birthright. How he regretted! He wept. For the first time in his life, he created time to seek God. He made time to repent but it was a little too late. The deed could never be reversed. Be careful not to yield to that temptation. Salvation can be likened to the birthright. It guarantees you forgiveness, healing, provision, deliverance, grace, protection, guidance, reward, promotion, breakthrough, heaven etc. No matter the temptation, Satan’s target is to steal your birthright-salvation, and in the process make you lose everything else. Reject that sinful offer. Do not compromise your faith over that matter in your business or family. It is your soul that is being sought for. If you lose your salvation, you have lost everything. Arise and pray now. Deny yourself and draw nearer God now, because a time is coming when it will be too late.
MEMORIZE: GENESIS 12:2 –And I will make of you a great nation, and I will bless you, and make your name great; and you shall be a blessing.
