DEALING WITH ENVY

READ: ROMANS 12:14-21
Whether a man will be envious or not is a choice he has to make. Just as you can choose to envy someone, so also can you choose not to. As a child of God, you can deal with the spirit of envy. How? According to James 3:7, whenever your flesh begins to move you to envy somebody, recognize the presence of the spirit of envy in your mind, resist it with God’s word and cast it out of your thoughts in Jesus name. Similarly, rather than envy your outstanding colleague, humbly go to him to learn the secret of his performance. See highly accomplished people as those who know what you do not know. Humble yourself and learn from them. A number of them did that to arrive where they are now. “Rejoice with them that do rejoice, and weep with them that weep” says; Romans 12:15.
Another way you can prevent envy is by accepting and thanking God for the success or promotion of others. Join them to celebrate their success. When it is your turn, others will join you to celebrate yours. Also, prevent a harvest of envy by not sowing it (Galatians 6:7). Whenever you see potentials in your colleagues, bosses or subordinates, help them to develop them to a point of success. Help others to become what God has planned for them to be. The more you do this, the greater your own success. The latent and unique abilities of your subordinates are your strengths. Never be intimidated by them. You are chosen to be leader because you know it all but because you don’t. You are chosen not because you are strong but because you are weak. You bury your own glory and destroy your opportunities for greatness each time you bury that of your brethren, especially those under you.
When Jesus retaliates, can you stand? According to Proverbs 10:22; it is a waste of time to envy unbelievers because their blessings are cursed. Also John 3:27 says you can only receive what God has given you, envying and coveting not withstanding. Instead of envying, why not ask God for what you need and He will give it to you. Instead of envying someone with five cars, ask God for 10. Why not ask God to make you greater than the person you are envying? If you are filled with the Holy Spirit, the spirit of envy will have no space to occupy. Mind your own business, be contented with what God gives; wait for God’s time of greater blessings.
