READ: 1 SAMUEL 17:38-40
“The wicked is snared by the transgression of
his lips; but the just shall come out of trouble.” (Proverbs 12:13).
May your tongue not put you into trouble. This verse says that whenever God wants to trap a wicked person, He allows the person to misuse his or her tongue. If you feel the urge to talk excessively, check your spiritual thermometer. It may uncover the fact that you have sinned and God is about to get rid of you. This is why wise believers always keep their mouths shut. Wise men are always men of few words. Those who have knowledge and understanding are identified by their meek and quite spirit. Like they say, it is the empty barrels that make the loudest noise.
“ in many things we offend all. If any man offend not in word, the same is a perfect man, and able also to bridle the whole body” (James 3:2).
There is a time to speak and a time to be quiet (Ecclesiastes 3:7). One way of identifying a mature Christian is his ability to keep his mouth under control. If you can control your tongue, there is nothing else you cannot control. If you claim to be holy yet indulge in frivolous talks, you are only deceiving yourself (James 1:26). On the day of judgement all the words you have spoken will stand to either justify you or sentence you to hell.
Talkative people make vows without thinking of the commitment to fulfil them. They may likely end up with unpaid vows. Have you made some vows which you have not paid after a reasonable period of time? It is most likely you are rash with your mouth. To solve this problem, James 1:19, says be slow to speak. Henceforth, deliberately take your time before responding to anyone over a matter. Be slow and careful to air an opinion or comment. Avoid companying with talkative people. Spend most of your time praying in tongues. God enjoys your prayers. They are stored in golden jars before Him so that they can rise like an incense of good savour. So keep praying and loading your heavenly jar. As you bridle your tongue, God will fill you with His power and give you His secrets and happily use you.
