SUCCOR FOR THE NEEDY

READ: 1 SAMUEL 23:1-5
While David was in exile, he heard that Philistines were robbing the children of Israel. So he asked God if he could go and the Lord gave him the go ahead. But his men were afraid and tried to discourage him. So he decided to check again with God and the Lord assured him of victory. With that, David encouraged his and they pursued the Philistines and had victory over them. There are some vital lessons we can learn here.
The first lesson is that David did not close his eyes to the need of the Israelites in Keilah although he was still being hunted by Saul. He took a big risk going to Keilah because he could have been killed. His love for his people made him respond to their needs. Today, many believers use their handicap as excuse for not fulfilling their obligations. They would say, ‘If God wants me to preach His word, let Him give me a job first.’ Or, ‘If God wants me to give towards the church building, let Him first make me a millionaire.’ Some sisters posted to work in the children’s church may even say, ‘If God wants me to work there, let Him first give me my own children.’ Are you one of those reversing the order? Your love, concern for others and obedience to God in the face of need can trigger off your miracle.
Also, even when David saw the need to deliver his people from the invading enemies, he did not allow his legs to go faster than his head. He took time to ask the Lord if he should go. After hearing from the Lord, and confusion and fear set in, he went back to God. The reason many of us fail is because when we see an opportunity, we jump at it before we talk it over with God. They say, ‘Not all that glitters is gold.’ Not every opportunity that comes your way is from God. Some so-called opportunities are actually death traps. Before you say ‘yes’ to any proposal or opportunity, go to God. If you have already made up your mind before going to God, it is your heart you will hear. If you want to hear from God go with open mind. Let Him know it is what He says that will determine your next step. Also when in doubt over any matter on which you have already heard from God, go back to Him for confirmation.
