FIGHTING FRUITLESS BATTLES

READ: JOHN 19:30
In 1 Samuel 23:1-5, David heard that Israel was invaded by Philistines, so he went to ask God if he should go or not. After receiving a go ahead, his men discouraged him so he returned to get confirmation from God before he attacked the enemies and obtained victory over them. From this we learn that David was a very careful person. Although he was a bold, seasoned warrior, and ever-ready to fight, yet he wanted to go to war only when he was sure he would return with victory. Christians must be careful and wise enough not to fight wars they cannot win. “I therefore so run, not as uncertainly; so fight I, not as one that beats the air.” (1 Corinthians 9:26).
Like David, Paul was another wise fighter. He does not fight as one who ends up beating the air. To him, there is no room for fruitless fights. He fights to win. Before you go to fight at all, be sure you will win the fight. There are certain battles you cannot win. It is wisdom not to attempt such in first place. According to Isaiah 45:9, a fight against your Creator is a fight you cannot win. Also a fight against Jesus Christ is a fruitless one (Philippians 2:10). According to Acts 2:1-4; an attempt to fight the Holy Spirit is a futile one. In Acts 12:1-23, Herod tried to fight against God but he died an uncommon death and was immediately eaten of worms. In our reading, Bar-Jesus tried to fight Jesus and he immediately lost his sight. Saul also tried but became blind. It took his total surrender to Christ to regain his sight. Are you fighting against God right now? Drop the fight before your defeat becomes public.
According to Psalm 105:14-15; another fight you cannot win is the fight against God’s anointed. If a man of God offends you, better pursue reconciliation and forgiveness. In the Bible, several people tried to fight God’s anointed but never succeeded. Miriam became a leper for a period because she teamed up with Aaron to fight their younger brother Moses. Korah, Dathan and Abiram rose to fight Moses and the ground opened and swallowed them up. A fight against God’s angels is another fruitless fight according to 2 Kings 19:35. A fight against God’s word is also a fight you cannot win because Psalm 119:89 says it is forever settled in heaven. Drop all fruitless fights today and begin to work towards victory in Jesus.
MEMORIZE: 1 CORINTHIANS 9:26 –I therefore so run, not as uncertainly; so fight I, not as one that beats the air.
