GENESIS 4:3-8
Envy is
a dangerous thing capable of leading one into several pitfalls. A true believer
must never envy anyone – whether a fellow believer or sinners. Are you envying
somebody in your office, at school or in church? Repent. Envy is an
uncontrollable vehicle heading for doom. Never ride in it. Today we read of
Cain who was destined to inherit the whole earth. He was doing well until the
day he decided to take a ride in the vehicle called envy. He and his younger
brother Abel went to sacrifice to God. His offering was rejected while his
brother’s was accepted. Instead of finding why his was rejected so that he
could make amends, and re-offer a more acceptable sacrifice, he became envious
of his brother. Before he knew it he had spilled his blood, thereby entering
the world’s book of records as the first murderer.
When you have envy in your heart it will generate deep hatred which, before long, can lead to murder. Do you hate some brethren just because you are not as talented, anointed, fortunate or favoured as they? Jump off that vehicle of envy. It is taking you to hell. In any case, 1 John 13 :5 says anyone who develops hatred towards his fellow believer is regarded as a murderer in the court of heaven and will automatically lose his eternal benefits. Similarly, in Genesis 37, the envy of Joseph’s brothers made them conspire to kill him. Envy can actually motivate the one who is riding it to attempt murder.
The envious will suufer terribly for their envy. In Genesis 49, when Jacob was to bless his children shortly before he died, only Judas was blessed. Their envy had robbed them of a bright future. In Numbers 16:1-3, we also learn of Korah, Dathan and Abiram who were envious of Moses. Their envy made them to plan his overthrow. But in the end, these three very promising leaders were swallowed up alive by the earth. Even their innocent families were not spared this unusual death. That envy in your heart can bring untold suffering and judgement both on you and your innocent family. Envy makes you struggle to acquire what belongs to others, and in the process you lose yours.

MEMORIZE: PROVERBS 14:30 –A sound heart is the life of the flesh: but envy the rottenness of the
bones.
